Union Minister of Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia met with Gwynne Shotwell, president and chief operating officer at SpaceX, the Elon Musk-owned firm that operates the Starlink satellite internet service. The meeting comes days after the firm received a Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite (GMPCS) authorisation from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). Ms. Shotwell was flanked by two other unidentified executives.
Calling the meeting “productive,” Mr. Scindia said that the meeting “delved into opportunities for collaboration in satellite communications to power Digital India’s soaring ambitions and empower every citizen across the country,” and that “with India’s digital revolution under the leadership of PM @narendramodi ji, satellite technologies are not just relevant, they’re transformative.”
This is the first time Mr. Scindia has commented on the authorisation, which had been delayed for months due to security and ownership documentation concerns at the DoT and at the Ministry of Home Affairs, which performed the security review of the firm’s operations. A GMPCS page on the DoT’s website has also been updated to reflect Starlink’s authorisation, alongside Jio and OneWeb.
