“That’s our song,” Seahawks DT Leonard Williams said via The Athletic’s Michael-Shawn Dugar.
That came after Seattle took over in the fourth quarter and even celebrated on the sideline when the song played on the North Shore, waving their own towels and embracing the moment. The Indianapolis Colts ahead of the Week 9 matchup tried to prepare during the week for the Renegade moment by pumping the song into practice sessions.
It’s unclear if the Texans tried anything with the song during the week, but after thoroughly thumping the Steelers on Monday Night Football, sending Pittsburgh packing into another long offseason, the Texans embraced the song — one that wasn’t even played on the night — by blasting it in the locker room.
Talk about pouring salt into the wound. As if the performance on the field wasn’t bad enough, now the Texans are mocking the song that the Steelers have become known for, at least defense, over the last few decades. On the night, it was the Houston defense that terrorized the opponent on the North Shore.
Maybe it’s time for the Steelers to retire the song entirely. There’s been plenty of discussion regarding that when it comes to the fan base in recent years as the moment just hasn’t felt the same. Though Steelers star pass rusher T.J. Watt praised the atmosphere in Week 18 against the Baltimore Ravens, especially around Renegade, and head coach Mike Tomlin spoke highly of the playoff atmosphere Monday night, the song and the setting it’s supposed to create just doesn’t hit like it used to.
Opponents aren’t shaken by it, either. All good things come to an end eventually, and maybe Renegade has run its course. It’s hard to come back from the largest home playoff loss in franchise history, leading to the song being blasted in the opponent’s locker room.
