2022 Tesla Model Y Expert Review
Reviewed by Duncan Brady
This is the Model Y, Tesla's smaller, cheaper sibling to the Model X SUV . Tesla introduced it as a new nameplate in 2020 and we're not expecting any significant changes for 2022, unless the automaker decides to add the yoke steering wheel and updated interior from the recent Model S/X refresh . The Model Y competes with other electric compact luxury SUVs including the Audi Q4 Sportback E-Tron and Volvo C40 Recharge. Some may also compare it to non-electric luxury SUVs including the Volvo XC60 and Jaguar F-Pace.
What We Think
The Model Y SUV is every bit as impressive as its sedan counterpart. Driving the Model Y Long Range, we noticed few concessions to accommodate the SUV's higher roofline and additional weight. This is a seriously quick vehicle with near-instant responses and steering reminiscent of a sports car. Those handling characteristics played a significant role in the Model Y's win over the Ford Mustang Mach-E in our recent comparison. The dynamics only improve with the Model Y Performance and its staggered wheels, larger brakes, and lowered suspension.
That said, both variants have a stiff ride. You'll feel every imperfection in the road, especially with larger wheels, which may deter some prospective buyers. There's a fair amount of tire noise infiltrating the cabin, too. We do appreciate the spacious, airy rear seat, though, which offers more than five inches of additional legroom compared to the Model 3.
As impressive as the Model Y is, we've also taken issue with Tesla's questionable build quality, a small rear window, and a glass roof that tends to heat up the interior. There isn't much off-road capability for an SUV, either. But if you're looking for a quick, spacious EV with more range than most other electrics, the Model Y is hard to beat.
Performance and Range
Tesla offers two variants of the Model Y, the Long Range and Performance, both of which feature a dual-motor AWD powertrain. Both models are fed by a 75-kWh battery. When we tested a Model Y Long Range, it reached 60 mph in a scant 4.1 seconds. Tesla claims the Performance model will make that sprint in just 3.5 seconds.
