The facility will use Tesla’s massive lithium-ion batteries to assist in stabilizing China’s ever-growing renewable-heavy power grid. Thanks to this deal, Tesla may have changed its future, with a special focus on being an energy infrastructure company beyond being an automaker. As for China, this deal’s timing is perfect as it strengthens its wind and solar power. These power sources are sporadic, which means that a large-scale energy storage is significantly important to provide continuous and reliable power throughout the country.
The world’s largest energy project
Tesla’s Megafactory is in Shanghai’s Lingang district, and the battery storage facility will be in proximity. As soon as the battery storage facility is complete, local energy providers will receive their power from the facility’s industrial-scale backup power. This will be useful in times when the grid is under pressure, and at times of low power demand, the facility will recharge.
Each lithium-ion battery (or Megapack) can supply up to 1 MW of power for four hours, powering hundreds of households even in peak demand. These Megapacks, when combined, are the foundation of Tesla’s large-scale energy solutions, which are already in use in the UK, Australia, and California. What makes China’s facility unique is that these Megapacks will be integrated directly into the fabric of one of the biggest power grids in the world.

According to another statement made by Tesla on Weibo, the grid-side energy storage facility can be described as a “smart regulator” for urban power, as it can adjust grid resources in real time in a flexible way, enabling it to meet power demand as it changes. This is beneficial for cities that are scaling up intermittent power sources, like China, with solar and wind.
