Despite the advances in cleaner diesel engines, the trucking industry contributes 1.6 metric tons of CO2 per year globally. Widespread adoption of electric trucks would play a huge role in reducing greenhouse gases and lowering the carbon footprint of our country, and around the world.

Tesla is currently mired in Model 3 production woes, so the big question is where will the Tesla truck be produced. Tesla isn't the only manufacturer diving into the electric truck space, so they'll have to move quickly and capitalize on the hype that the Tesla semi is promising. Rivals such as Daimler AG
have already produced smaller electric trucks as well as electric big rig concepts, but Tesla wants to have its Semi on the road by 2019.
