WARR easily beat out the other two finalists, from Switerzerland and North America, in the mile-long race. Musk was impressed but didn’t hold back his optimism, saying he thought they could reach up to 500 kilometers an hour — or upwards of 300 mph — with modest adjustments.
The Hyperloop first grabbed the public’s attention in 2012, when Musk introduced the idea for a rapid transit system between San Francisco and LA. Using tubes and railways (think mail tubes for humans), passengers would be darted from destination to destination at several hundred miles per hour. Musk and SpaceX — his rocket company — open sourced the idea, and its attracted a few other companies to the mix.
Hyperloop One, an LA-based team of 200 workers not affiliated with Musk, completed its first test run in May. It’ll now look to hit 250 mph in its next phase.
And if you think you can build a better carbon fiber pod than WARR, you’ll have a shot next year, with SpaceX bringing the competition back for a third run.
