Elon Musk-led Starlink is nearing its India launch amid fierce opposition by local rivalries Ambani-led Jio and Mittal-led Airtel. Per reports floated in the Indian media earlier the subscription for the satcom service is being curated to woo the average desi users who are perpetually online. According to several news outlets Starlink India would launch an introductory offer at $10 with unlimited internet. At nearly Rs 850 per month, this sounds very much like what Jio would do, although they gave it all for free initially to tap a large slice of the Indian market.
FYI, the Starlink kits cost anywhere between $250 and $380, which means an Indian consumer will have to cough up anywhere between Rs 21,000 and Rs 33,000 just for the hardware. In Bangladesh, Starlink costs BDT 47,000 or INR 33k for a one-time equipment fee, along with BDT 2,800 or INR 2,000 for shipping. The monthly plan starts at BDT 6,000 or INR 4,200.
Reacting to the media reports, Michael Nicolls, the VP of Starlink’s Engineering remarked,
These reports are false - we won’t be able to launch service with a $10/month plan given the limited capacity available and costs to deploy the network.
