J.P. Morgan predicts that Viasat, a competitor of Starlink, could lose up to $80 million of revenue per year due to @SpaceX’s new deal with United Airlines to equip its entire fleet of over 1,000 airplanes with Starlink internet service.
The feature comparison of Starlink vs Viasat for passenger aircraft service is:
Bandwidth Speed Currently available on many major airlines
Starlink:
Still in rollout phase, with United Airlines being one of the first major carriers to sign on
Expected to become more widely available from 2025 onward.
Installation and Hardware
Both systems require specialized aircraft hardware, but Starlink’s equipment is newer and may require different installation procedures.
Cost to Airlines
Pricing structures differ, but Starlink’s deal with United Airlines includes free Wi-Fi for passengers, potentially indicating a competitive pricing model for airlines.
Starlink appears to offer potentially higher speeds, lower latency, and more advanced features like gate-to-gate connectivity. However, Viasat is a more established provider with wider current availability. The aviation industry is closely watching Starlink’s rollout to see how it performs in real-world conditions across a large fleet of aircraft.
