*Earlier this month (May 2026), as news broke that Spirit Airlines had officially shut down all operations after years of financial struggles, something strange happened online. Within hours, social media was buzzing with claims that Elon Musk was swooping in to save the day.
The headlines were tempting: “Elon Musk in talks to buy Spirit Airlines.” “Musk plans to reinvent air travel.” Users on Instagram, TikTok, X, and Facebook shared mockups of “SpiritX” planes, complete with Starlink satellite internet, robot flight attendants, and futuristic cabin designs.
There was just one problem. None of it was true.
Where the Rumor Started
The fake story originated on May 2, 2026, from an X account called @HoopsCrave. The account carries a clear disclaimer in its bio: “parody account.” It posted: “Elon Musk is said to be purchasing Spirit Airlines, with plans to reinvent air travel completely.”
That post received 2.2 million views and 25,000 likes in just four days.
@HoopsCrave has a history of posting fake headlines involving major brands. In the last month alone, the account “reported” that Walmart released self-driving shopping carts, that Target now requires a membership card to enter its stores, and that Chuck E. Cheese announced its mascot is non-binary.

How Satire Became ‘News’
The next day, conservative X user @MikeBales shared the claim as if it were factual, stating: “Elon Musk is reportedly in talks to acquire Spirit Airlines, with ambitious plans to revolutionize the air travel experience.” That post garnered 773,900 views and 13,000 likes.
From there, the rumor exploded. Spirit’s dramatic shutdown on May 2 created a perfect vacuum for jokes. The airline’s statement read: “Unfortunately, despite the Company’s efforts, the recent material increases in oil prices and other pressures on the business have significantly impacted Spirit’s financial outlook. With no additional funding available to the Company, Spirit had no choice but to begin this wind-down.”
Into that void stepped the Musk rumor. And because Elon Musk has a well-earned reputation for bold, unconventional moves—buying Twitter (now X), launching Tesla, founding SpaceX, and creating xAI—the story felt believable to many.
The Facts: No Talks, No SEC Filings, No Comment
Here is what actually happened. There are no SEC filings. No official statements. No credible news reports. And Elon Musk has not commented on Spirit Airlines at all.
Rachel Chesley, a representative at FTI Consulting, which represents Spirit Airlines, told NewsGuard in an email: “We have not heard from Mr. Musk or any entities affiliated with him.”
Spirit Airlines’ own May 2 statement made clear the company was not in discussions with any party to sell. “It became clear on Thursday that sufficient incremental liquidity would not be found, and that there were no longer any viable paths to restructuring or continued operations,” the company stated.

Why the Hoax Spread So Fast
Several factors fueled the fire. First, Spirit’s sudden shutdown left people shocked and looking for answers. Second, Musk had recently joked about buying another budget airline. On January 16, 2026, after Ryanair refused to install Starlink on its planes, Musk posted on X: “Should I buy Ryan Air and put someone whose actual name is Ryan in charge?”
That joke made the Spirit rumor seem plausible to casual observers. Third, people love a good meme. Crowdfunding campaigns with names like “Let’s Buy Spirit” popped up as jokes. Fans created mock SpiritX boarding passes. The internet did what the internet does best: turned a fake headline into a cultural moment.
Bottom Line
Pure satire took flight as fake news. No deal is happening. No billionaire is saving Spirit Airlines. And while the idea of robot flight attendants and Starlink-powered budget travel is fun to imagine, it remains exactly that—imagination.
So, if you see someone celebrating Elon Musk’s “purchase” of Spirit Airlines, you can politely correct them. Share this article. And remind them to always check the source before hitting share.
