China Moves To Outlaw Retractable Car Door Handles Over Safety Fears

Chinese regulators are set to clamp down on retractable car door handles after growing concern that the design can prevent occupants from escaping vehicles during emergencies. The change will affect a wide range of models, including those from Tesla and several domestic electric-vehicle brands that have embraced the feature in recent years.
Under new standards due to come into force next year, all cars sold in China will be required to have door handles on both the inside and outside that can be opened mechanically. These handles must remain operable even if a vehicle loses power or is involved in a crash. The rules also dictate where handles must be positioned and require clear instructions to be displayed near the interior release.
China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said the updated regulations are aimed at raising overall vehicle safety standards, following a series of incidents that highlighted potential risks associated with electronically dependent door systems.
Flush and retractable handles have become increasingly popular, particularly on electric cars that prioritise sleek design and efficiency. In markets such as the United States, the feature appears on vehicles from Tesla and Hyundai, while in China it is especially common as roughly half of all new car sales are electric or plug-in hybrid models
Unlike conventional handles that protrude from the door and can always be gripped, retractable designs sit flush with the bodywork until activated. They typically extend automatically via a key fob or smartphone, or by pressing on the handle itself. Manufacturers argue that this approach improves aerodynamics and marginally boosts driving range.
However, complaints from owners have been rising. Data from J.D. Power shows battery-electric vehicle owners reported 3.1 door-handle-related problems per 100 vehicles in 2024, a sharp increase from just 0.2 per 100 vehicles in 2020. Some drivers say the handles can be confusing or difficult to use, particularly in stressful situations.
Inside the cabin, several modern cars rely on electronic buttons to open doors. Although many also include a manual release, it is often poorly marked or hidden, leaving occupants unaware of how to use it when electronics fail. In 2023, a United States safety regulator launched an investigation into Tesla, noting that the mechanical door release in the 2022 Model 3 was not easily accessible.
China’s decision follows a number of serious accidents. State media reported that a crash involving a Xiaomi SU7 Ultra in October left at least one passenger trapped because the door could not be opened. The model in question uses retractable handles. Xiaomi has not publicly commented on the incident.
For vehicles that have already been approved and are close to market launch, manufacturers have been given extra time. Regulators said those models must be updated with compliant door-handle designs by January 2029.
