Fremont woman killed in San Mateo-Hayward Bridge crash
The crash happened shortly before 3 p.m. on Jan. 22 at the Iron Point Station, near an outlet mall next to Highway 50, the Sacramento Regional Transit District said.
The car reportedly veered off Iron Point Road, hit a tree at the edge of the station’s parking lot, then continued about 60 yards across the lot and crashed into the elevated train platform. It struck a person on the platform, then flipped over a railing and landed on the train track.
The person struck on the platform was pronounced dead at the scene, emergency officials said.
The driver — the Tesla’s sole occupant — was able to get out of the car on her own. She was taken to a hospital; no information was given on her condition.
News images from the scene showed the car nose-down on the track, with extensive front-end damage including a missing wheel. Its back end was propped on the 3-foot-tall metal railing of the boarding platform.
Train service on a 7-mile stretch of the SacRT Gold Line was suspended until about 8 p.m. as the crash was investigated and the tracks inspected, the transit agency said.
