It’s not every day that a pack of raunchy playing cards goes head-to-head with a space company run by the richest man on Earth. But then again, Cards Against Humanity has always specialized in improbable punchlines.
After a year-long legal battle, the irreverent card game company has reached a settlement with SpaceX over a plot of land the game’s creators say Elon Musk’s company “invaded” and covered in construction debris. The dispute centers on a strip of property along the U.S.-Mexico border that Cards Against Humanity (CAH) bought back in 2017 to protest Donald Trump’s border wall.
A Joke that Became a Lawsuit
Back then, CAH raised more than $2 million from supporters to “make it as time-consuming and expensive as possible for Trump to build his wall.” Around 150,000 people donated $15 each, funding the purchase of a small piece of land in Cameron County, Texas.
But in 2024, the company accused SpaceX of rolling right over that land — literally. The lawsuit alleged that SpaceX “cleared the lot and put down gravel,” parked vehicles there, stored construction materials, and installed generators without ever asking for permission. As Ars Technica reported, court documents confirmed SpaceX admitted to trespassing during the discovery phase.
CAH broke the news to its donors, writing:
“Dear Horrible Friends,”
“Remember last year, when we sued Elon Musk for dumping space garbage all over your land, and then you signed up to collect your share of the proceeds? Also, remember how we warned you that we’d “probably only be able to get you like two dollars or most likely nothing”?”
“Well, Elon Musk’s team admitted on the record that they illegally trespassed on your land, and then they packed up the space garbage and fucked off. But when it comes to paying you all, he did the legal equivalent of throwing dust in our eyes and kicking us in the balls.”
According to the Associated Press, the case was settled just weeks before it was set to go to trial in early November 2024. The terms of the settlement remain confidential, but CAH says SpaceX’s admission of wrongdoing was “very validating.” The big wad of cash probably helps, too.
