Longtime media executive Linda Yaccarino announced Wednesday that she is resigning as CEO of X (formerly Twitter), a role she took on in June 2023 under Elon Musk, on the very platform she ran.
“When @elonmusk and I first spoke of his vision for X, I knew it would be the opportunity of a lifetime to carry out the extraordinary mission of this company,“ she wrote on X. “I’m immensely grateful to him for entrusting me with the responsibility of protecting free speech, turning the company around, and transforming X into the Everything App.”
She highlighted some of the things the X team has accomplished, including prioritizing safety of X users, especially children and restoring advertiser confidence. She also gave nods for the work to bring to life Community Notes, and soon, X Money and @xai. Her departure follows X’s absorption into xAI, which is Musk’s artificial intelligence firm, completed roughly four months ago, Wired reported.
It remains unclear whether Musk will appoint a new CEO or maintain the role himself.
Yaccarino did not provide a specific reason for leaving, nor indicate future ventures.
Her exit comes amid ongoing advertiser wariness, especially after the controversial debut of Grok — xAI’s chatbot — on the platform, according to Wired.
“Yaccarino’s departure – for whatever official or unofficial reason – is just the latest example of turmoil for X. But coming so soon after the accounts of its Grok program using antisemitic tropes makes you wonder if that was the last straw," said Marc Bona, a features writer for cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer. “She reportedly was making $6 million a year, and with the authority that comes with her title also comes responsibility.”
With CEO duties in flux, Musk, who continues as xAI chief at X, will likely play a role in choosing the company’s next leader, with no immediate replacement announced.
