SpaceX is planning to launch its 10th Starship test flight in about three weeks, according to company founder and CEO Elon Musk, who shared the update on X on Monday, July 14. According to the Musk, the launch would be in August. This would put the next launch about ten weeks post last one, marking the fourth Starship flight of the year.
However, flight 10 has already faced certain setbacks during the routine tests. The upper stage that was originally set to fly actually blew up during a ground test at Starbase on June 18, just as SpaceX was prepping it for a routine engine check. After digging into it, the team traced the problem to a failed pressurized nitrogen tank in the nosecone. Now, they’re switching gears and getting a different Ship ready to take its place. In the last test flight, SpaceX had faced already a couple of major setbacks such as both the Super Heavy booster and the Starship upper stage were lost. The booster went down just over six minutes into the flight, and then about 47 minutes later, SpaceX lost contact with the upper stage.
Earlier this year, IFT-7 in January gave SpaceX its second successful catch of the Super Heavy Booster using the launch tower’s chopstick arms. But the mission wasn’t without issues as the Ship exploded mid-ascent over the Turks and Caicos Islands. Then came IFT-8 on March 6. SpaceX managed to catch the booster again, but the upper stage didn’t make it through that flight either.
Still, SpaceX isn’t slowing down. Even with the setbacks, the team is staying focused on making Starship the go-to vehicle for reusable spaceflight and, eventually, missions beyond Earth.
If Flight 10 goes smoothly, it’ll be a big step forward for SpaceX. A successful mission would show real progress in Starship’s reusability and overall system reliability. These are the two things that are absolutely critical if the company wants to pull off its long-term plans. SpaceX isn’t just dreaming of Mars. It wants Starship to handle everything from resupplying space stations to landing astronauts on the Moon, and eventually ferrying people and cargo to Mars and possibly even farther.
