Tesla has officially listed its electric SUV, the Model Y, on its India-dedicated webpage, with starting prices from ₹59.89 lakh for the Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) variant and ₹67.89 lakh for the Long Range RWD model. These are on-road prices.
The page does not yet include delivery timelines or booking details. Right now, no booking or test drive options are listed either.
Tesla is opening its first India showroom in Mumbai today, July 15.
Two variants listed
While Tesla has been in talks with the Indian government for over three years, this is the first time pricing has been disclosed for the Indian market. The Model Y, currently Tesla’s best-selling vehicle globally, is expected to appeal to the luxury and performance-conscious EV buyer in India.
The two variants listed are:
Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD): ₹59.89 lakh (ex-showroom)
Model Y Long Range RWD: ₹67.89 lakh (ex-showroom)
These variants are widely sold in other markets and boast ranges of over 400 km on a single charge, depending on battery configuration and conditions.
Tesla’s move comes at a time when the Indian government has introduced a new EV policy allowing lower import duties for automakers committing to local manufacturing within three years.
Tesla in India: A long courtship
Tesla CEO Elon Musk met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2023 and publicly committed to entering the Indian market “soon”. Several state governments have since pitched potential factory locations, with Maharashtra and Gujarat leading the race.
Neeta Sharda, Principal Architect at Trident Interiors and Designers, who led the design of Tesla’s first showroom in India, told CNBC-TV18 that the project was internally dubbed "Operation Peacock" — a highly confidential initiative ahead of the brand’s launch.
Sharda revealed that Tesla's team envisioned an all-white theme for the space, aligning with its global design language, and added that a dedicated Tesla service workshop is also in the works.
With competitors like Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, and BYD strengthening their electric offerings in India, Tesla’s pricing strategy will be closely watched. The ₹60–70 lakh bracket positions the Model Y alongside premium ICE SUVs and top-end EVs.
