Czech Railways has announced the successful installation and testing of a special Starlink satellite internet antenna from SpaceX on its InterPanter 660,004 train.
Development of the satellite internet system for the Czech Railways InterPanter trains was carried out by transport vehicle manufacturer Škoda Group.
The InterPanter with Starlink received permission to run live tests with passengers from the Czech Railway Authority, and the Czech Telecommunications Authority compares available speeds of the Starlink system with the mobile networks of all operators.
Starlink for use on trains is installed on the roof of one of the front cars of the vehicle with a cable line between the antenna and the train's power supply.
The InterPanter trains' existing WiFi and multimedia systems can now be integrated into the Starlink network, which Czech Railways said will enable passengers to connect to high speed internet for free.
"We believe that satellite internet can be the answer to the question of how to ensure a stable and fast internet connection for our passengers even where there is no quality signal from mobile operators around the tracks," said the chairman of the board and CEO of Czech Railways Michal Krapinec.
"Unfortunately, there are still plenty of such white spots on the domestic rail network.
"We now have approximately three months of test operation, within which we want to evaluate and assess the technical parameters of the given solution, the overall stability of the connection and the benefit for our passengers.
"If this technological solution proves successful, we will enter into negotiations with Starlink about deliveries for our next trains."
