Is there something unusual and eerie happening with some Tesla Cybertrucks?
Imagine Taylor Holden and his wife being awakened in the middle of the night by the alarm on his Tesla Cybertruck. They live miles from anyone in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.
He finds his Cybertruck's door slightly ajar, its window down a quarter of an inch, and there's no evidence that anyone has tampered with his truck.
I imagine it happening this way.
Taylor is awakened at 2.17 AM when the piercing shriek of his Tesla Cybertruck's alarm ripped through the quiet. His wife, Sarah, bolted upright beside him. She was the first out of bed as he wiped the sleep from his eyes.
"What the –" he mumbled, fumbling for his cell phone.
His Tesla app says, "Driver's Side Door Open."
They live miles from anything, deep in the Oklahoma plains. Sentry mode, the Cybertruck's vigilant guardian that uses the vehicle's external cameras to detect potential threats, was always off when it was parked securely in their driveway.
The idea of an intruder out here was almost laughable, yet the alarm screamed its protest.
They raced to the second-floor bedroom window overlooking the driveway. The Cybertruck sat there, its angular form a dark silhouette against the moonlit night.
No one. The outdoor security cameras, strategically placed around the property, showed nothing but rustling oaks and the occasional deer.
As they approached the truck, the driver's door wasn't fully open. The door was ajar, true, but still latched. The window on that same door was also slightly dropped, just a fraction of an inch. Taylor tried the door handle; it was secure. He pushed the door fully closed, and with a soft whir, the window sealed itself.
They waited for a long moment, the chill of the night air cold as they stood there in their night clothes. There were no footprints in the gravel, no disturbed bushes, and no sign of anything or anyone.
"A glitch?" Taylor whispered, more a question to himself than to Sarah.
After the incident, he asked other owners on the Tesla Cybertruck Owners Facebook page if they'd had a similar experience.
Taylor says, I had a weird one tonight. My truck was parked at home with the Sentry mode off, and the alarm went off randomly in the middle of the night.
The door said it was open. We live in the middle of nowhere, and no one was caught on our other cameras. The door was slightly ajar but still latched, with the window slightly open.
Advertising Has anyone else had this happen? I'm leaning towards a glitch.
Other Tesla Cybertruck owners have also experienced this unusual phenomenon.
Damon Fox says, "I had the same thing happen to me repeatedly last week at Epic Universe in Florida. The rain was pouring at their charging stalls, and I was next to another Cybertruck, so I thought it might've been interference, so I moved."
"The same thing kept happening; I walked away. It auto-locked, and by the time I got into the park, 5 to 10 minutes later. I receive the alarm alert and go back to find that my passenger door is popped open. Nothing on camera happened like three or four times in a row until I finally just ignored it and kept the door unlocked."
Taylor responds, "This is now fitting my theory. I just got my windows tinted. This appears to be related to water entering the doors and interfering with the door release switch module. Your story makes it make more sense."
Charles says, "The same thing happened to my Cybertruck after getting the windows tinted as well. I just let it fully sleep. I didn't drive mine for two days, and it eventually stopped doing it. It's a fail-safe, so the electronics don't get water damage from what I gathered."
Tom La - "The same thing happened to me twice. The alarm went off, and the passenger door was slightly open."
So, is there a software glitch in the Tesla Cybertruck?
The Cybertruck has experienced software glitches and other issues that could lead to problems like those described by Taylor and the other owners.
Potential causes:
Door and window sensor issues: Sensors that detect whether a door or window is open or ajar may be malfunctioning, causing the alarm to trigger even when the door appears to be properly closed.
Software bugs: Tesla's Cybertruck has faced issues with its software, including errors related to vehicle settings and the infotainment system.
Door handle issues: In some cases, owners have reported that the Cybertruck's door handle is not working correctly, which could also be a factor in triggering a phantom alarm.
Water infiltration: Excess water, particularly after actions such as window tinting, has been identified as a potential cause of door sensor malfunctions and phantom alarm triggers.
What should owners do?
Check the door and window seals: Ensure the doors and windows are properly sealed and that there are no visible obstructions that could interfere with the sensors.
Calibrate the windows: If you suspect a window issue, you can attempt to calibrate the window through the vehicle's controls.
Perform a system reset: You can try a soft reset by holding both scroll wheels on the steering wheel until the Tesla logo appears.
Contact Tesla service: If the problem persists after trying the above steps, it's best to schedule a service appointment with Tesla to have the vehicle diagnosed and repaired.
