More bang for your buck? Whatâs not to like about 124 sonic booms annually?
Quoting the Department of Air Force (DAF) draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) âoverall launches for (SpaceX) Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy up to 100 launches per year.â Falcon Heavy, which DAF claims has not launched previously from Vandenberg (VSFB), would launch a maximum of five times per year.
Landings produce even more powerful sonic booms. Calculations from the EIS 3.6.2.1.4 MMPA-Protected Pinnipeds (Sea Lions) ââ¦would be disrupted by noise and visual disturbance associated with up to 100 Falcon launches and up to 24 landing events per year.â That means 124 sonic booms annually.
âFalcon 9 and Falcon Heavy launches and landings have the potential to cause damage to some structures depending on overpressure (sonic boom) levels the structures are exposed to as well as the construction quality and condition of the structures.â
âFalcon 9 generates over 1.7 million pounds of thrust â¦Falcon Heavy would generate more than 5 million pounds of thrust at liftoff, equal to approximately eighteen 747 aircraft. Falcon Heavy is one of the worldâs most powerful operational rockets,â (source: SpaceX).
Â
In October 2024 the California Coastal Commission denied DAFâs application for increased launches from 36 to 50.
What is accurate in the EIS? âThe No Action Alternative is the environmentally preferable alternative.â
DAF is accepting public comments on âair quality, noise, biological resources, water resources, cultural resources, coastal resources, Department of Transportation Section 4(f) resources, utilities, socioeconomics, transportation, human health and safety, hazardous materials and waste management, solid waste management, and geology and soils.â
