Grok is too “woke” according to some X users so Elon Musk is tasking xAI with retraining Grok.
The billionaire is calling on X users to give Grok “things that are politically incorrect, but nonetheless factually true” which can be used to retrain the platform.
Unfortunately these responses are littered with opinions and false information that could do little more than hurt Grok’s abilities to provide informed responses to prompts.
Training artificial intelligence platforms requires massive amounts of data so as to give a platform the best shot at being functional and competent. This data comes from a variety of sources often obtained through questionable means.
However, at the weekend, Elon Musk decided that his AI companion Grok, developed by his AI firm xAI, needed a refresh, not in terms of its capabilities, but the data it draws from to formulate answers. This is because the platform has drawn criticism from right-wing users who believe that the answers Grok provides – which are based on available data – is too “woke”.
“When Grok first came out – it was awesome – now Grok is just woke fake news that repeats liberal talking points. I know this for a fact because everything Grok says about me is a lie. What a joke Grok has become,” a well-known right-wing X user, posted last week.
Another user responded to this post tagging Grok which can be summoned to answer questions on X, asking why it lies about the user in question. The AI bot responded that it merely aims to provide accurate, neutral responses based on data that it has available. The user in question has been known to spread misinformation and this behaviour has been outlined by several sources, namely Media Matters and Rolling Stone.
But this didn’t sit well with folks who believe that it’s not their opinions that are wrong, it’s the world that is the problem.
One such person is xAI owner Elon Musk who believes that in order to fix Grok, the entirety of humanity’s knowledge must be re-written.
“We will use Grok 3.5 (maybe we should call it 4), which has advanced reasoning, to rewrite the entire corpus of human knowledge, adding missing information and deleting errors. Then retrain on that. Far too much garbage in any foundation model trained on uncorrected data,” Musk posted to X.
The billionaire, who again, has his finger in the Grok pie, went on to call for folks to reply to a post with “things that are politically incorrect, but nonetheless factually true.”
This went about as well as you’d expect with over 100 0000 people responding to the post, all making claims with little evidence to back them up. There are folks claiming foreigners commit more crimes than residents, various instances of vaccine denialism and so much opinion you could get lost for hours. Unfortunately Musk’s request has acted like a lightning rod for his critics and conspiracy theorists so the value of those responses are like tantamount to asking a pre-school class their thoughts on nuclear power.
