What's the story
Tesla has launched its first-ever robotaxi service in Austin, Texas.
The highly-anticipated debut comes after several delays and is being hailed as a major milestone in the world of autonomous vehicles.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced the "robotaxi launch" on his social media platform X, calling it "the culmination of a decade of hard work."
He added that "the AI chip and software teams were built from scratch within Tesla."
Pilot project AI division says robotaxis can be deployed anywhere
Tesla AI, the team behind the robotaxis, has said that these vehicles can be deployed anywhere they are approved.
The company also emphasized that its technology doesn't need expensive specialized equipment or extensive mapping of service areas.
As Tesla's robotaxi goes live, Texas lawmakers have enacted new rules for autonomous vehicles.
The law, which comes into effect on September 1, requires a state permit to operate self-driving vehicles.
Authorities can also revoke permits if operators are deemed a public danger.
