Eddie Fritz is a Model Y buyer who says he was really disappointed when he went to pick up his brand-new, juniper-fresh Model Y.
The new vehicle was full of defects, including poor paint quality with blotchy touch-ups, deep scratches, misaligned door handles, and a visible stain on one of the seats.
This was bad enough; however, Eddie adds that the Tesla sales representatives were aggressively pushing him to accept the delivery of the Model Y.
Tesla suggested that Eddie take delivery and assured him that the EV maker would be willing to correct the issues after he made the full payment.
Eddie definitely did not like this suggestion; however, what disappointed him even more was a statement from one of the Tesla employees who downplayed all the issues, saying, “At Tesla, we’re more concerned about technology rather than build quality.”
After this interaction, Eddie says he rejected the delivery and left the Tesla showroom without a vehicle.
The frustrated Model Y buyer shared his experience on the Model Y Owners' Club Facebook page.
He writes…
“I’m disappointed in Tesla. I went to pick up my Model Y today and encountered multiple issues before taking delivery, ultimately forcing me to leave the dealership without a car.
The paint repair was poor; the touch-up looked blotchy, like whiteout. There was a deep scratch on another door and a stain on the passenger seat.
They kept trying to persuade me to accept the car despite these issues, claiming they would send someone to repair it later.
Additionally, the rubber on the door jam was misaligned, preventing the door from being flush. It was concerning to hear the service guy say they are more focused on technology than on the quality of the manufacturing process.
I walked away without the car, but I will give them a second chance when the next one is delivered in a week or two.
My best advice is to use the checklist and not accept anything less than a new vehicle without imperfections. I haven’t given up, but today was definitely not a good experience.”
Looking at the comments, other refreshed Model Y owners have also shared that they have experienced issues with their brand-new vehicles.
A fellow Model Y owner, Oren Buchler, writes…
“Unfortunately, I’ve encountered numerous issues with my new Model Y.
I took delivery last month, but I found a few things I was unhappy with. They have since fixed everything except one problem.
My windshield was misaligned on one side, but they claimed it was within specifications. When I asked about the specifications, they said they couldn’t provide that information.
It seems very convenient. I walked around several other Model Ys that had just arrived at the dealer and was shocked to see that they were all in much worse condition than mine, so I’ve decided to live with it.
However, if my windshield ever cracks, I will take it to a reputable shop to have it replaced properly.”
Another Model Y owner, Saeng Bunsy, seconds this sentiment and says her situation with her Model Y is way worse.
Saeng writes…
“At least you didn’t leave the showroom and had to call a tow truck 15 minutes later!
The coolant hose was loose, and the whole car shut down. I am scheduled to pick up my replacement car this Wednesday.”
At this point, fellow Model Y owners were surprised that Tesla replaced the entire car because of a loose coolant line.
However, Saeng says her brand-new Model Y had to be returned to Tesla Service for a second failure, and Tesla also discovered that the odometer was not calibrated properly.
Finally, the EV maker decided to simply provide her with another vehicle.
Seang writes…
“Yes, Tesla decided to replace the whole car. After it was towed and 'fixed,' it had to go back to the shop for another issue. The odometer is not accurate either. I got a lemon.”
Below her post, Saeng shared a picture and a video of her brand-new Model Y loaded onto a tow truck.
Having to get a brand-new vehicle towed 15 minutes after delivery is definitely frustrating.
And looking at the comments, Tesla’s statement that the EV maker is “more concerned about technology than build quality” seems to be leaving a lot of Model Y owners with problem-ridden vehicles.
