Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla will become first Indian astronaut to travel to the International Space Station (ISS). A test pilot from Indian Air Force is one of Indian Space Research Organisation, ISRO's four astronauts who have been selected for India’s Gaganyaan mission.
Indian Astronaut's Shubhanshu Shukla’s Life and Education
He was born in Lucknow on October 10, 1985 and completed his schooling from City Montessori School, Lucknow. It was 1999 Kagil war that motivated him to serve the nation. He pursued Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science in 2005.
To move towards his dream, he cleared the UPSC National Defence Academy (NDA) examination. While he was undergoing astronaut training, he pursued a Master of Technology degree in Aerospace Engineering from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore.
Shubhanshu Shukla began his journey with the Indian Air Force in June 2006 as a Flying Officer in the fighter stream. Over the years, he’s built an impressive record as a test pilot, clocking more than 2,000 flying hours on a wide range of aircraft, including the Su-30 MKI, MiG-21, and Jaguar. In 2019, he was selected by the Institute of Aerospace Medicine as one of the candidates for ISRO’s first astronaut training program.
He then went to Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Russia for traininng. After returning, he continued his training at ISRO’s dedicated astronaut facility in Bangalore to get ready for future missions.
It was in 2024 when PM Modi announced his selection as an astronaut. Shukla’s trip to the ISS will be a proud first for India and a major step forward for ISRO’s upcoming Gaganyaan mission.
