Elon Musk’s Starlink Satellite Internet India launch soon: Here’s how much it may cost, speed, plans and more
Big news for internet in India! Elon Musk’s Starlink, which offers super-fast internet from satellites, just got a major approval from the Indian government on June 6th, reports Reuters. This means Starlink can now get ready to launch its service in India. Starlink is already available in over 100 countries and promises to bring high-speed internet to places where regular internet doesn’t work well. It’s like saying goodbye to areas with no internet!

Starlink is now one of only three companies (the others are OneWeb and Reliance Jio) to get this important telecom license in India. The company has already received a Letter of Intent (LoI) from the government’s telecom department. Think of this as a preliminary green light.
Now, they’re waiting for a special license called the Global Mobile Personal Communications by Satellite (GMPCS) license. This is the key license they need to actually set up and use their satellite internet equipment in India.
What is Starlink?
Starlink, SpaceX’s pioneering satellite internet venture, is engineered to provide a truly transformative broadband experience. It achieves this by deploying a vast, interconnected network of satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO). This strategic placement, much closer to Earth than conventional satellites, is key to its superior performance, delivering dramatically lower latency and more consistent speeds.
This groundbreaking technology is particularly crucial for India’s remote and underserved communities, where limited or non-existent traditional internet services—like fiber optics or cellular networks—have left many disconnected. Starlink’s mission is clear: to bridge this digital divide and bring seamless, high-speed internet access to areas that standard connectivity solutions have historically overlooked.
Starlink speed:
Starlink users typically see download speeds ranging from 25 to 220 Mbps, with most enjoying speeds over 100 Mbps.
Starlink cost in India:
According to The Economic Times, Starlink is set to launch in India with a highly competitive initial promotional offer: unlimited data plans priced below $10 per month (roughly Rs 857). This strategic, entry-level pricing is anticipated to provide SpaceX’s service a powerful advantage in seizing early market share, allowing it to move ahead of impending rivals such as Eutelsat OneWeb (backed by the Bharti Group), Reliance Jio’s partnership with SES, and Globalstar, all preparing their high-speed satellite internet offerings.
