“Today is about reigniting the dream of space and getting people fired up about the future,” says SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, emphasizing that the Falcon 9 Crew Dragon launch scheduled for May 30, 2020, should inspire people from all walks of life to imagine the future’s vast possibilities. “Anyone who has within them the spirit of exploration should be excited about what’s going on.”
The launch is only possible thanks to painstakingly designed hardware and software, the creation of which is lightly documented in two new videos from SpaceX.
SpaceX spent almost 4 years designing their crew suits. The spacesuit is custom made for each astronaut and hand assembled at their rocket fabrication lab in California. “The suits are a part of the one Dragon system,” says Chris Trigg, Space Suits and Crew Equipment Manager at SpaceX. “It’s really a part of the vehicle.”

The suit connects to the seat via an umbilical cord that hooks up avionics, air, and gas exchange. Every metric can be monitored and visualized in real-time. Suit gloves are touch-screen enabled, allowing astronauts to interact “intuitively” with Dragon’s modern cockpit.
