Elon Musk’s Starlink may offer affordable satellite internet in India under ₹1,000 per month, reports suggest

Elon Musk’s Starlink is nearing the official rollout of its satellite internet services in India. Already operational in more than 100 countries, the service promises high-speed, low-latency internet, especially in regions lacking reliable broadband infrastructure. Starlink will be available in both urban centres and remote regions across the country. But how much will it cost Indian users? Early reports suggest that monthly plans might be priced under ₹1,000.
According to a report by The Economic Times, SpaceX could introduce unlimited data plans in India at promotional prices below $10 — roughly ₹840 per month. The strategy is seen as a way to gain an early lead in India’s growing satellite broadband market. Starlink will be competing with other upcoming services, including Eutelsat OneWeb supported by Bharti Group, Reliance Jio’s joint venture with SES, and Globalstar. Starlink is also reportedly working with major Indian telecom operators Jio and Airtel for service distribution.
Earlier this month, Starlink received a Letter of Intent (LoI) from the Indian Department of Telecommunications (DoT), marking a major milestone in its entry into the country. However, according to PTI, final approvals are still pending from the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe), and the allocation of spectrum remains under process before operations can formally begin.
Starlink’s presence already spans over 100 countries, including nearby nations like Bhutan and Bangladesh, where it provides fast internet access in hard-to-reach areas. In the United States, the service currently costs about $120 per month, which is approximately ₹10,200. India, however, is expected to receive more affordable pricing. After the promotional rates end, actual monthly charges may reportedly range between ₹3,000 and ₹7,000, depending on the region and plan type.
Besides the monthly subscription fee, customers will need to buy the Starlink hardware kit, which includes a satellite dish and Wi-Fi router. Globally, the kit is priced between $250 and $380, which converts to about ₹21,300 to ₹32,400. This one-time cost may pose a challenge for some Indian consumers, especially when compared to fibre broadband plans in India that often come with lower installation fees and additional entertainment benefits.
Still, for people living in underserved or remote areas, Starlink could provide a much-needed solution for accessing stable, high-speed internet connectivity.
