President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. urged American automotive and clean energy company Tesla to expand its Philippine operations by establishing an electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing facility, as the e-vehicle brand opened its first domestic showroom.
Speaking at the Tesla Center Philippines’ launch in Taguig on Monday, the President highlighted the government’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions and support the growth of the EV sector.

“With plans to expand further, Tesla is building a generation of Filipinos equipped to lead in the global shift towards sustainable technologies such as this,” Mr. Marcos said.
During the event, the chief executive pointed out that current Philippine policies offer incentives to manufacturers and consumers of EVs alike.
Key policies supporting the EV industry include the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion (TRAIN) Act, which removed excise taxes on battery electric vehicles, and the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act (EVIDA), which offers duty-free importation for charging stations, lower user fees for EV owners, and prioritized registration and traffic privileges.
Additionally, the September inauguration of a state-of-the-art facility producing advanced iron phosphate batteries, a key component for EV production, is a step forward in developing the industry, Mr. Marcos said.
The President expressed optimism that a local Tesla car factory would create new jobs for qualified Filipinos.
“Every hire represents an investment in Filipino talent that drives this transition forward,” he added.
Tesla’s presence, the President said, would encourage local innovation and attract more investments in the EV sector.
“The government has adopted policies and pursued strategic measures that reflect our commitment to enhancing sustainable transportation while meeting the needs of Filipino commuters,” the President said.
He also declared that EVs are the future of the Philippines’ transportation system, calling Tesla’s entry into the market a significant step toward the country’s long-term environmental goals.
“While it is true that electric vehicles are currently seen as premium products, Tesla’s entry into the Philippine [market] signals much more than high-tech cars on the road,” the President said.
Tesla Motors Philippines Inc., a subsidiary of Tesla Inc., officially entered the Philippine market on November 8, 2024.
Tesla Inc., listed on the NASDAQ with a market capitalization exceeding $1.2 trillion, is recognized as a global leader in sustainable transportation and energy solutions.
