Elon Musk's tunnel construction company The Boring Company (TBC) intends to build a 17 km long loop transportation system in Dubai. TBC and the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) signed a letter of intent to this effect on Thursday. The tunnel system planned to date is to be an initial pilot section.

The initially planned Dubai Loop pilot project is to comprise a tunnel system with a length of 17 km, through which Tesla electric vehicles are to roll. The plan is to build a total of eleven stations along the entire route. This should make it possible to transport more than 20,000 passengers per hour, according to a statement from TBC. In the long term, up to 100,000 passengers per hour are planned.
Relieving traffic volume above ground
The Dubai Loop is intended to relieve traffic congestion in the Emirate of Dubai to transport passengers safely and efficiently. At the same time, the project is also likely to be a prestige project. The aim is to equip the urban area with a modern underground transportation system. BTC also wants to research and test new technologies.
According to the letter of intent, the system will connect important hubs in Dubai. Travel times could then be significantly reduced. Speeds of up to 100 mph could be achieved with the electric vehicles.
The declaration of intent was signed at the World Government Summit in Dubai. TBC did not provide any information on costs or a timetable.
A similar route, the Vegas Loop, has been in operation in Las Vegas in the US state of Nevada since 2021. The system there also consists of an underground tunnel system in which electric vehicles travel between individual stations in order to relieve above-ground car traffic. There are now plans to extend the loop system there to a length of 110 km.
