World Asthma Day 2024 marks an important occasion for raising awareness about a condition that affects millions worldwide. Organized by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA), this annual event aims to shed light on the prevalence of asthma and the importance of education in managing the condition effectively.
With the theme of "Asthma Education Empowers," this year's World Asthma Day emphasizes the crucial role of healthcare professionals in providing reliable information and optimal treatment for asthma patients. Despite significant advancements in medical science, asthma remains one of the most common chronic non-communicable diseases, impacting over 260 million individuals and leading to over 4,50,000 deaths each year.
One key aspect of asthma management that requires attention is the proper use of inhalers. Inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) are a cornerstone of asthma treatment, helping to reduce inflammation in the airways and prevent asthma attacks. According to GINA, more than 90 percent of asthma deaths worldwide occur in low-income countries due to lack of corticosteroid-containing inhalers.
What you need to know about inhalers
In a video by Times Of India, Mumbai-based Pulmonologist Dr. Sarthak Rastogi highlighted the significance of inhalers in providing rapid relief from asthma symptoms without the need for systemic medications and their potential side effects. He elucidated the various types of inhalers available in the market, which include pressurised metered-dose inhalers, dry powder inhalers, and breath-actuated inhalers.
