BYD has just unveiled the Ocean-M concept at the 2024 Beijing Motor Show. The concept car previews a future production model that the automaker will launch in the third quarter of the year.
The Ocean-M looks like a hot hatch with extreme design, coming to fight the Ioniq 5 N in terms of looks and powertrain, but we have yet to see how much BYD will squeeze out of its motor(s).
Therefore, we can't tell for sure if it will give the two a run for their money once it hits the market. The Chinese media claims it might be a contender for the Volkswagen ID.3, which would position it in a totally different segment, leaving the "hot hatch" aura behind.
One thing seems certain, though. A hatchback would make no sense in the United States right now. So the production model is probably aimed at the European market, where such body style is still fighting for survival.
The front end displays elongated headlights flanking the BYD lettering. There are wide gaping air intakes underneath and a prominent spoiler lip, ready to take on the airflow at high speed.
The very narrow and tinted greenhouse, matching the black pillars and roof, highlights the athletic nature of the model. The roof-mounted rear wing comes with the same purpose, plus aerodynamics and downforce, confirming that it might be a track-trained vehicle.
A split air diffuser matching the silver front lip rounds up the design. There are LED taillights above it, linked by a full-width LED strip. We have yet to see how much of this aggressively styled body kit will make it to production. The Ocean-M rides on alloy wheels with a dark finish.
Slotting somewhere between the Dolphin and the Seal, the upcoming Ocean-M will hit the market both as an
